Daniel Ortega – the feminist?

The fruit of "more than 30 years of revolution" and the latest sign of the Sandinista commitment to gender equity. This is how Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega is spinning the fact that women account for 62% of the 220 Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) candidates running for positions in the legislature and Central American parliament in November's elections. Ortega's feminist rhetoric however belies the fact he is responsible for one of the biggest setbacks to women's rights in recent years – the blanket ban on abortion.
