Arias probe. The supreme court has decided not to sanction the attorney general, Jorge Chavarría, investigated for alleged influence peddling in connection with former minister of the presidency, Rodrigo Arias [WR-11-06]. It ruled that there was no proof Chavarría had ordered the suspension of a probe into Arias at the behest of the government. Arias is being investigated for alleged misuse of US$2m from the Central American Integration Bank (Cabei). Chavarría said he was "very happy to see that justice is being served". Manrique Oviedo, the head of the opposition Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) in a legislative committee also investigating the case, said the court was "taking the comfortable option" and "leaving Costa Rican society short-changed".
