Colom claims victory in Guatemala

Alvaro Colom will become the next president of Guatemala on 14 January 2008. Colom, of the left-of-centre Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE), won 52.8% of the vote against 47.2% for Otto Pérez Molina, a retired general running for the right-wing Partido Patriota (PP) on 4 November in a relatively tight run-off, remarkable for the prompt electoral count and Pérez Molina's swift concession.
