Guyana wins border dispute with Suriname

The UN International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea ruled in favour of Guyana in its long-standing maritime dispute with Suriname. Guyana filed a dispute in 2004 over its maritime border beyond the mouth of the River Corentyne. The tribunal ruled on 20 September that the boundary should follow, for the most part, "the equidistance line" between the two countries. This favours Guyana, which gains sovereignty over 33,152 km2 of coastal waters; Suriname was awarded 17,871km2.
