Ronald Venetiaan leads the New Front (Nieuwe Front—NF) coalition. A prominent figure in Suriname's relatively recent return to democracy, he was president for the first time from 1991 to 1996. He was re-elected to the post in August 2000 after a landslide victory at the polls for the NF.
