Bharrat Jagdeo first took over the presidency from Janet Jagan when she was taken ill in 1999, and was re-elected to the post on 19 March 2001. Educated in economics in the Soviet Union, Jagdeo had served People's Progressive Party (PPP) governments as Guyana's representative at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) among other posts. He was minister of finance between 1995 and 1999 before being handpicked by Jagan as her successor. His appointment prompted dissent from the mostly Afro-Guyanese opposition People's National Congress (PNC) but was considered by many as the start of a new era in Guyanese politics.
