Enrique Bolaños is a successful businessman and a former leader of the conservative Liberal Constitutionalist Party (Partido Liberal Constitucionalista—PLC). An outspoken critic of the left-wing 1980s Sandinista regime, he was persecuted and imprisoned but refused to leave the country. Since running for election in November 2001 he has distanced himself from his former running mate and scandal-tainted predecessor Arnoldo Alemán.
