GUATEMALA: New US-backed army unit to combat drugs trade

The Guatemalan government has decided to create a second special army unit, with support from the DEA and the US Southern Command, to seek out and destroy clandestine airstrips used by drug smugglers in the south and southwest of the country. The first one, which has been operating in the north since the beginning of the year, has just concluded what has been described as a very successful campaign.
