MEXICO: Crackdown on 'fringe' Christian churches

The Mexican government has made use, for the first time, of powers introduced in 2003 to regulate the practice of religion in the country. Its main target was the church best known for its cult of Santa Muerte ('Saint Death'), which has had its legal standing revoked, but it has also taken action against other churches, all nominally Christian. These measures have revived charges that the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) is still 'in the pocket' of the Roman Catholic church.
