POLITICS & MINING: Government cedes ground in face of mining protests

The government was compelled to backpedal on two mining initiatives in the space of two weeks this month after protesters in southern Peru blocked the Pan-American highway. Although President Alan Garcí­a fulminated against the protesters as “infamous minorities who practice road terrorism," his government caved in to their demands, setting a dangerous precedent in the process: there could well be an increase in such protests in the run-up to municipal and regional elections in October.
