As predicted by the polls, President Evo Morales beat his closest
rival, Manfred Reyes Villa of the right-wing Plan Progreso para
Bolivia-Convergencia Nacional (PPB-CN) by more than 30 percentage points in the
6 December presidential contest. Less expected was the scale of his victory in
the eastern Media Luna departments, or in the congressional elections - where
his Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) won virtually a two-thirds majority. The
absence of any national political opposition (traditional or otherwise) and
pre-eminence of the MAS across the country and in the legislature, provides
Morales with the biggest popular mandate in recent history to continue his
declared aim of implementing the new constitution. End of preview - This article contains approximately 1115 words.
