Free trade talks

Bolivian negotiators will meet their Chilean counterparts in Santa Cruz between 30 July-1 August to discuss their proposed free-trade agreement.

The two countries hope to sign a definitive agreement by the end of 2003. In Santa Cruz, the negotiating teams hope to reach a compromise on a quota for Bolivian sugar exports to Chile.

The issue of sugar exports is the last major hurdle remaining in the first stage of the trade talks. The two sides have already met four times and are close to agreement on the tariffs that will be applied to around 7,000 products.

Once a technical agreement on specific products has been reached, the two sides will move on to discuss more general measures, including guaranteed access to markets and production standards.
