CHILE: Defence minister flails in Falklands balancing act
On 26-27 September regional press reported on an interview by Chile’s defence minister, Fernando Barros Tocornal, in which he attempted to walk a diplomatic tightrope between reiterating his government’s support for Argentina’s claim of sovereignty over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and acknowledging the reality of the UK’s claim and the self-determination of the islanders – a stance which is unlikely to play well in Buenos Aires.
