There are tentative signs of a rapprochement between Chile and Bolivia. Historically bilateral relations have been strained by an unresolved dispute over Bolivia’s access to the Pacific. While tensions have persisted across successive administrations, diplomatic cooperation and dialogue have gained momentum in recent years. This process has accelerated under Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz, who took office in November 2025, and Chile’s President José Antonio Kast, who began his term in March. A recent exchange of op-eds by the two countries’ foreign ministers has provided a public illustration of attempts to forge a new era in relations, although obstacles remain.
