In brief: Major Chilean mine suspends operations following fatality
*Chile’s national mining regulator (Sernageomin) has announced it will investigate a fatal accident that took place yesterday at the Escondida copper mine in Antofagasta region, which is operated by Australia-headquartered multinational mining company BHP. A worker was reportedly killed while carrying out maintenance works. Media reports yesterday cited the mining firm as stating that all operational activities at the Escondida mine have been suspended, without giving an indication of when they might resume. The accident comes amid labour tensions at the Escondida mine, with BHP and other owners of the mine currently engaged in negotiations regarding salaries, compensation, and employee benefits. Union leaders have rejected BHP’s latest offer and have called on mine workers to vote in favour for a strike from 28-30 September.
