MEXICO | Inflation picks up. On 9 September Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) released new figures for its consumer price index, showing a monthly inflation rate of 0.20% in August, while annual inflation stood at 3.26%, within the target of 3% ± 1.0 percentage point set by the central bank (Banxico). The monthly rate was up from 0.03% in July and deflation of 0.27% in June. The rise in annual inflation from 3.12% in July to 3.26% in August was the first acceleration in five months, although it remained below June’s 3.37%. Core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, stood at 0.16% month-on-month and 3.88% year-on-year, down from 0.23% and 3.95%, respectively, in July. This comes after Banxico held its benchmark interest rate at 6.50% on 6 August.
