*Canada-headquartered mining company Sigma Lithium has announced that it will continue its activities in Brazil despite a recent ruling by a federal court in Minas Gerais state which suspended its environmental licences. The court ruled on 4 September to suspend Sigma Lithium’s licences on the grounds that its environmental impact assessments included incorrect information regarding the proximity of its mining facilities to nearby quilombola territories – traditional communities of Afro-Brazilian descendants of former slaves who established rural settlements. Yesterday Sigma Lithium released a statement to deny the accusations of providing false information and to criticise what it describes as a “preliminary court ruling” that was “issued without due process”. The company stated that it has not received any legal communication in relation to the ruling and questioned the jurisdiction of the court, arguing that the federal court is based in the town of Teófilo Otoni, which the company claims is located over 300km away from its mining operations in the Vale do Jequitinhonha region of Minas Gerais.
