*Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley has paid a visit to Venezuela where she met President Delcy Rodríguez and the two announced new bilateral agreements, spanning areas including energy, agriculture, culture, education, tourism, and air and maritime transport. The two also announced the establishment of the first joint commission between both countries tasked with overseeing and carrying out these various agreements. According to a social media post by Mottley, the works agreed can “strengthen Barbados’ energy and food security, create new openings for our farmers, fishers and businesses, build stronger tourism and trade links, and improve the movement of goods. It can also open doors for Barbadians through scholarships, language training and exchanges in music, energy and fisheries.” She also highlighted Barbados’ response to the earthquakes which struck Venezuela in June, noting that Barbados “answered with rescue workers, medical teams, humanitarian supplies and a field hospital in Guarenas”, a city in Venezuela’s Miranda state. Mottley’s visit to Venezuela follows that by Rodríguez to Barbados in late April in what was her first official visit to Barbados and second trip abroad since assuming the presidency following the 3 January capture of former president Nicolás Maduro (2013-2026) by US forces. It is the latest sign of Rodríguez’s efforts to shore up ties in the Caribbean, a diplomatic priority for the president since taking office in January, with the sub-region having been divided over the US incursion in Venezuela and other actions by the US administration led by President Donald Trump.
