In brief: Venezuela’s Rodríguez meets US and IMF delegations

*Venezuela’s President Delcy Rodríguez has held a meeting with a “high-level delegation from the US government”, which she said involved discussion of “the response to the [24 June] double earthquake, binational energy cooperation, investments, and security”. Although few details were made public about the meeting, a brief video shared on social media by Rodríguez shows that it was attended by US officials including the assistant secretary of state for economic, energy, and business affairs, Caleb Orr, and Jeremy Lewin, undersecretary for foreign assistance, humanitarian affairs, and religious freedom. Rodríguez also met yesterday with a delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which included the IMF’s director for the Western Hemisphere, Nigel Chalk. According to Venezuela’s economy ministry, the meeting “centred around an exchange of opinions about macroeconomic perspectives, priorities for economic policies, areas of technical assistance aimed at strengthening institutional capacities, and the use of international reserves for the financing of the ‘Venezuela Reborn’ plan”, which aims to rebuild homes and infrastructure damaged by the earthquakes. Earlier this month, Rodríguez announced that Venezuela has received US$346m in funds from the IMF, appearing to refer to Venezuela’s reserve tranche at the Fund.
