CUBA: High-profile prisoner released into exile

One of Cuba’s most high-profile dissidents, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, was recently released from a jail in Cuba and has since gone into exile in the US, in what would appear the latest move by Havana aimed at appeasing Washington which continues to apply unprecedented pressure to the island via a fuel blockade, sanctions, and the threat of military action. It comes amid little sign that other concessions made by the Cuban government, such as its sweeping economic reform package [WR-26-24], are having much impact.
