*The Consenso de Brasília integration mechanism, consisting of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela, has announced an initiative for South American air transport (Itas). The foreign ministry of Uruguay, which holds the group’s rotating presidency, said that this is
“a document that recognises the need to expand aerial connectivity and flows of trade and people between places in South America, with direct connections that generate efficiency and reduce costs”. It added that
“the consolidation of the Itas will happen in a planned, gradual, and progressive way, in coordination with the industry”. It said that the goal is that
“in the future, these [international] flights will have the same treatment as domestic flights”.
