CUBA: UN win for Havana belies fading support

Amid tensions with Washington, which is applying a maximum pressure campaign on Cuba aimed at forcing its economic and political opening, Havana recently claimed a diplomatic victory after securing a vote at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for an emergency session to debate the need to lift the US economic, commercial, and financial embargo on the island. The vote, nonetheless, exposes the continuing decline in support for Cuba at the UNGA where members vote each year on a symbolic resolution urging the US to lift its embargo. While these have historically produced overwhelming backing for Cuba, some countries have broken ranks in the last year or so, amid efforts to keep on the right side of the US administration led by President Donald Trump.
