MEXICO: USMCA in limbo

Mexico’s Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard travelled to Washington, DC on 8 July to prepare the next round of bilateral negotiations for the review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which is due on 20 July. His visit comes as the US declined to renew the deal in its current form on 1 July, meaning the agreement will miss out on an automatic 16-year extension and instead embark on a 10-year rolling review process [WR-26-26]. Although a blow to Mexico, as well as Canada, Ebrard and President Claudia Sheinbaum have been upbeat about the future of the deal, stressing the significance of the US not pulling out of the deal altogether and expressing optimism over reaching agreements between the three countries soon.
