URUGUAY: Orsi’s popularity plummets

Uruguay’s President Yamandú Orsi is wrestling with a precipitous decline in popularity barely 16 months into his five-year term, which concludes in 2030. A combination of gaffes, broken campaign promises, and a sense of drift and indecision has seen Orsi’s approval rating fall sharply not just among centrist independents but also supporters of the ruling left-wing coalition Frente Amplio (FA). He is trying to turn his fortunes around with a big push on public security, but more will be needed.
