Roberto Sánchez can no longer overhaul Keiko Fujimori to win Peru’s presidential elections. Fujimori’s wafer-thin lead has grown day by day since the second round on 7 June during the slow but steady revision of ballot sheets with irregularities by the special electoral council (JEE), and it finally reached the point on 23 June where there are now insufficient votes left to count to alter the outcome. Sánchez is refusing to accept defeat, but the national electoral council (JNE) looks set to reject all of his appeals denouncing fraud in overseas voting, and Fujimori should shortly be declared the victor.
