US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has paid a visit to the Guantánamo US naval base in south-eastern Cuba, in what is the latest sign of pressure by the US administration led by President Donald Trump on Havana to make economic and political changes. With Washington having imposed a crippling fuel blockade on the island, expanded existing sanctions, publicly floated the possibility of military action and indicted former president Raúl Castro (2008-2018) [WR-26-20], Hegseth’s visit, which follows recent trips to Cuba by the head of the US Southern Command (Southcom), General Francis Donovan [WR-26-22], and the head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), John Ratcliffe [WR-26-20], did little to dampen speculation regarding US military intentions.
