BRAZIL: Presidential hopefuls vie for evangelical votes

The government led by the left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), as well as right-wing opposition figures such as Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (Partido Liberal, PL), have recently ramped up their efforts to appeal to evangelical Christians ahead of Brazil’s general elections in October. On 4 June evangelical church leaders organised a major rally in São Paulo, which was attended by Bolsonaro and other conservative politicians. A few days later, the PT held a national conference in Brasília on 8 June for its evangelical Christian members, an event where left-wing politicians reiterated their support for the re-election bid of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
