*Venezuela’s President
Delcy Rodríguez has met India’s Prime Minister
Narendra Modi as part of a five-day visit to India from 3-7 June. Following the meeting, Modi wrote on social media that they had
“extensive discussions on expanding our cooperation in energy, critical minerals, technology, agriculture, health and people-to-people ties”. He added that
“as a valued partner in Latin America, our close cooperation with Venezuela holds immense importance for the Global South” and said that
“we will continue to work together for the mutual benefit of the people of our nations”. Rodríguez wrote on social media that they had discussed cooperation in
“transport, healthcare, energy complementarity, agriculture, science, and technology”. No concrete announcements have so far been made concerning Rodríguez’s main objective of the visit – cementing India’s status as one of the leading buyers of Venezuelan oil. India’s foreign ministry secretary (East),
Rudrendra Tandon, said yesterday that
“in the energy sector we see a perfect complementarity” and that
“in our spot purchases Venezuela has already emerged as the third largest supplier this month”. He said that
“Venezuela’s energy sector is undergoing a fundamental transformation” and that
“they see India as a stable [buyer] for many years to come”. This is Rodríguez’s fourth trip abroad since she took office in January, following visits to
Barbados and Grenada in April and to
the Netherlands last month.
