MEXICO: Boosting ties with Europe

Mexico and the European Union (EU) signed an updated trade agreement on 22 May during a summit in Mexico City (CDMX). The agreement, negotiations for which were finalised in January 2025, expands an existing deal that has been in place since 2000. While a major boost for trade, the agreement is also political, with Mexico and the EU pledging to increase cooperation on security, the environment, technology, and human rights, among other issues. The strengthening of ties comes at a time of global uncertainty, with ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, and the unpredictable, protectionist policies of US President Donald Trump. Indeed, both Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and EU leaders used the summit to defend multilateralism and speak out against conflict, as both seek to diversify international relations and trade away from the US.
