MEXICO: Gulf oil spill prompts concern

What began as faint traces of tar washing ashore on the beaches of Tabasco state in early March has grown into one of Mexico’s most complex environmental crises in recent years. As the weeks went by, the oil spill spread extensively across the Gulf of Mexico, contaminating hundreds of kilometres of coastline – from the waters off the state of Campeche through the states of Tabasco and Veracruz, and reaching as far as the northern border state of Tamaulipas, disrupting local economies and raising environmental concerns. After insisting the state-run oil company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) was not to blame, on 16 April the government admitted that a leak in a Pemex pipeline was the cause of the spill. The government announced dismissals and highlighted clean-up and community support efforts. However, the damage, both political and environmental, may have already been done.
