In brief: Mexico to uphold Cuban doctors scheme

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that Mexico will continue to participate in the Cuban doctors programme, describing it in her daily press conference yesterday as a “bilateral agreement that helps Mexico a lot”. Her comments come as other countries are pulling out of the scheme, which provides Cuba with crucial revenue, under pressure from the US government led by President Donald Trump. On 4 March Jamaica announced it was terminating its participation in the scheme, following in the footsteps of Guyana, Guatemala, and Honduras in recent weeks. Sheinbaum’s announcement nonetheless comes as Mexico has stopped fuel shipments to Cuba under pressure from Washington which has threatened the island’s oil suppliers with tariffs, although it continues to send humanitarian aid.
