In brief: Paraguay appoints new head of state oil company

*Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña has named William Wilka as the new head of Paraguay’s state-run oil company, Petróleos Paraguayos (Petropar), following the resignation of Eddie Jara, who had been in the role since 2023. Jara announced his resignation on social media, saying he was stepping down “in light of the facts that are public knowledge, and with the aim of contributing to social peace, institutional stability, and respect,” without going into further detail. According to the local press, Jara has recently faced various questions about his management, including inconsistencies detected by the comptroller general’s office (CGR) in his declarations of assets and income, as well as lavish personal spending. Shortly after Jara’s announcement, Peña also issued a social media post, announcing the appointment of Wilka, who had been serving as general manager of Petropar. Peña stated that Petropar was “a key company” for his government, highlighting its involvement in important decisions such as the reduction in fuel prices. He said he had asked Wilka to “bring Petropar into the future and strengthen its strategic role, moving towards more agile and efficient management”. He said he had also tasked Wilka with initiating a “direct dialogue with sugarcane growers to develop responsible and sustainable solutions that provide predictability to the sector and strengthen the entire production chain”.
