MEXICO: Trouble in Tequila

Mexico’s municipality of Tequila is primarily known for the agave-based spirit to which it gave its name. However, the municipality has been in the news for other reasons in the past week after its mayor, Diego Rivera Navarro, was arrested for allegedly extorting beer and tequila companies. The arrest took place as part of a wider, ongoing purge of corrupt public officials by the federal government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The case sends a particularly strong message given that Rivera is affiliated to the federally ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), with Sheinbaum demonstrating that her government is willing to go after those from within its own party.
