Claudia Sheinbaum has inaugurated the three final stations of the Tren El Insurgente, a new intercity train connecting Mexico City (CDMX) to Toluca, the capital of neighbouring Estado de México (Edomex), after 12 years of construction. In a press conference, the CDMX mayor,
Clara Brugada, said that
“today we have achieved one of the most important dreams of the city”, saying the train would reduce journey time for those travelling between Edomex and CDMX. Sheinbaum confirmed that total investment in the project amounted to M$100bn (US$5.77bn). The project, initiated under former president
Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) and continued under his successor,
Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), was first estimated to cost M$38bn and expected to open in late 2018, according to Spanish newspaper
El País. The first three stations from Zinacantepec, west of Toluca, opened back in 2023. The fourth was inaugurated in August 2024, and the three final stations, all in CDMX, opened yesterday (2 February), effectively integrating the intercity line into CDMX transport systems. The journey from Toluca to CDMX now lasts 50 minutes, compared to two-and-a-half hours before, for a journey of some 57km. Its cost varies depending on the length of the journey, with a maximum of M$100. Some 140,000 daily passengers are expected, whilst a maximum of 20 trains will operate at once, each carrying up to 719 passengers, according to
Andrés Lajous Loaeza, the director of the Agencia Reguladora del Transporte Ferroviario (ARTF), Mexico’s rail transport regulatory agency.
