MEXICO: SCJN austerity in question

Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN) announced on 25 January that it would return recently purchased armoured security trucks, which have been the subject of much controversy in recent days. The purchase of the trucks, reportedly for a total cost of around M$25m (US$1.46m), received widespread public criticism, prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to request more information about the purchase. The incident indicates the heightened scrutiny that the new SCJN justices, who took up their seats on 1 September, are under given that their appointment by popular vote was supposedly aimed at rooting out corruption and ushering in greater austerity.
