HAITI: Targeting top gang leader as key deadline approaches

On 14 January Haiti’s national police (PNd’H) announced that it had targeted property owned by prominent gang leader Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Chérizier in the capital Port-au-Prince. The announcement comes as security forces appear to be increasingly focusing their efforts on gangs in the capital ahead of the key deadline of 7 February when the mandate of the transitional presidential council (CPT), which was established in the wake of the ejection of former prime minister Ariel Henry (2021-2024) following unprecedented gang attacks, is due to expire.
