*Nicaragua’s finance minister,
Óscar Danilo Mojica Aguirre, has resigned after being appointed on 27 August 2025. He replaced
Bruno Gallardo who retired, having taken over in June 2024 from
Iván Acosta who had been in the post since 2012 but
was sacked, reportedly over differences with
Laureano Ortega Murillo, a presidential adviser on investment who is the son of authoritarian co-presidents
Daniel Ortega and his wife,
Rosario Murillo. No reasons were given for the resignation of Mojica Aguirre, who is the son of Transport Minister
Óscar Salvador Mojica Obregón, a retired major general of the Nicaraguan army. Mojica Obregón was blacklisted by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac) in 2019 for being a current official of the Nicaraguan government, which since April 2018 has been carrying out a brutal crackdown on dissent. Acosta was blacklisted by Ofac in 2020 for the same reason. According to the national gazette, the deputy finance minister,
Nicolás Espinoza Rivera, has been authorised to sign off on all documents related to public finance. Mojica Aguirre departs as Nicaragua’s economy, which the International Monetary Fund
noted last month remains “
resilient” and grew 3.9% in the first half of 2025, is set to face new pressures as the US government led by President
Donald Trump recently announced
new tariffs on Nicaraguan exports to be phased in from 2027.
