Machado risks exile as US forces seize tanker

The arrival of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado in Norway to collect her Nobel Peace Prize on 10 December may have marked the end of one chapter in the effort to unseat President Nicolás Maduro. Government figures warned Machado, who is under investigation for numerous supposed crimes, that she would be considered a fugitive if she left Venezuela, putting her in significant peril if she attempts to return. On the same day, however, there was a major escalation in the US military pressure being exerted on Maduro, with US troops seizing an oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast. Intervention by Washington, rather than domestic campaigning by the political opposition, now seems to be the most likely route to Maduro’s downfall.
