*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures for the country’s poverty rate, showing that the proportion of the population living under the poverty line dropped from 27.3% in 2023 to 23.1% in 2024. This corresponds to an annual decrease of 8.6m people. The proportion of the population living in extreme poverty dropped from 4.4% in 2023 to 3.5% in 2024, equivalent to 1.9m fewer people. The latest declines in the poverty rate and extreme poverty rate mark the third consecutive annual decreases in both indicators. In a press release, the Ibge stated that the poverty figures would be higher without the social programmes implemented by the government led by President
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to Ibge estimates, the poverty rate in 2024 would have been 28.7% and the extreme poverty rate would have been 10.0% had the government not implemented social welfare programmes.
