Claudia Sheinbaum has met with her Honduran counterpart, President
Xiomara Castro, in Mexico City (CDMX) to discuss energy cooperation, youth support programmes, and migration, among other issues. A joint statement said the leaders had celebrated the results of two social programmes, apprenticeship scheme Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro and tree-planting initiative Sembrando Vida, that Mexico has implemented in Honduras. The statement said the programmes have benefitted more than 20,000 people in their first phase, with Sheinbaum and Castro announcing the launch of the second phase which will benefit a further 26,000 Hondurans, according to a Honduran government press release. They also highlighted progress in terms of energy cooperation, thanks to agreements signed by the Honduran government with Mexican institutions including state oil company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), public research organisation Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo, and the state-run electricity firm, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). Honduras’ Foreign Minister
Javier Bu stated that the country would renew an agreement with Pemex for the exploration of oil in Honduras, as well as technical cooperation. In terms of migration, Sheinbaum and Castro reiterated that cooperation is key in order to address the structural causes of migration and promote wellbeing in the countries of origin. They agreed to follow up on the conclusions of two initiatives convened by Mexico: the Encuentro de Palenque, held in October 2023, and a meeting on mobility in the northern part of the continent, held in January of this year. The trip to Mexico was the last foreign visit of Castro’s term, as she prepares to hand over the presidency following elections on 30 November.
