PANAMA & COSTA RICA: Different ways of engaging in free trade with the US
On 23 June the Panamanian and Costa Rican governments agreed on the last details of a bilateral free trade agreement. According to the Panamanian minister for trade and industry, Alejandro Ferrer, the agreement will seal the already "excellent relations" between the two neighbours. The deal is particularly important for Panama, which last year imported US$287m worth of Costa Rican produce. Costa Rica, meanwhile, imported far less from Panama: US$182m. The Panamanian government hopes the deal will lead to a more equalised trade with Costa Rica.
