In brief: Mexico hands over flight slots to US airlines

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has said that Mexican airlines have handed over some flight slots to US airlines “within a framework of competitiveness”. In a press conference yesterday, Sheinbaum said the slot redistribution had taken place “several weeks ago”, without providing more details on how many slots were affected or at which airports. The distribution of slots at the Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM), the main airport in Mexico City (CDMX), has been a major complaint of the US Department of Transportation (DoT) in recent months. On 28 October, the DoT froze the expansion of cargo-passenger combination services between the US and the AICM, as well as cancelling all such services between the US and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), some 50km from Mexico City (CDMX), citing anti-competition practices affecting US airlines. Sheinbaum said a team from the Mexican government had recently met with the DoT to discuss the measures. She said the US had to recognise the importance of both the AICM and the AIFA, a priority project of her predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), and the Mexican government’s obligation to promote both. The US has opposed the relocation of US cargo carriers from the AICM to the AIFA. “There is a good atmosphere, so to speak, and talks will continue for several weeks with the understanding that we can reach an agreement,” said Sheinbaum.
