Paz rips into MAS legacy in fiery inauguration speech

The inauguration of Rodrigo Paz as Bolivia’s new president on 8 November drew the curtain on nearly two decades of left-wing rule by the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). Paz used his inauguration speech to highlight the unenviable inheritance he has been left by his predecessor Luis Arce (2020-2025), drawing attention to a sinking economy, bitter polarisation, and a politicised judiciary. Strong international support will be crucial if Paz’s centre-right administration is to succeed in reviving the economy, and building those ties has been the focus of his first week in office.
