In brief: Brazil’s primary deficit widens in September

*Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released figures showing that the public sector registered a primary deficit of R$17.5bn (US$3.2bn) in September, up from a deficit of R$7.3bn in the same month in 2024 and from R$17.3bn in August. The central government’s primary deficit was R$14.9bn, while the regional governments ran a deficit of R$3.5bn. State companies registered a surplus of R$1.0bn. Over the 12 months to September, the accumulated public sector primary deficit totalled R$33.2bn, equivalent to 0.27% of GDP. This was up from R$23.1bn, or 0.19% of GDP, in the 12 months to August.
