GUATEMALA: Arévalo fends off “attempted coup”

Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo accused the attorney general’s office and a corrupt arm of the judiciary this week of attempting to orchestrate a coup d’état. Arévalo has been on the receiving end of repeated attempts to unseat him since he took office in 2023 with the discredited attorney general, Consuelo Porras, pushing for his presidential immunity to be lifted on spurious grounds. Those efforts are intensifying as time runs out before Arévalo can replace Porras as attorney general.
