In brief: Chile’s presidential candidates talk economy

*The eight candidates in Chile’s 16 November presidential elections have participated in a second televised debate, in which the economy, employment, and pensions were a focus of discussions, as well as security and organised crime. Jeannette Jara, the candidate for the ruling left-wing coalition, whom the latest survey by local pollster Cadem shows as winning November’s first round, proposed an ‘ingreso vital’ (minimum vital income) of Cl$750,000 (US$797) a month for families in vulnerable economic situations. Meanwhile, José Antonio Kast of the far-right Partido Republicano (PR), whom the Cadem poll shows in second place some seven percentage points behind Jara in the first round, has proposed cuts of Cl$6bn over 18 months. In the debate, he stated his government would do this without cutting any social benefits that currently exist, but rather by State and legislative adjustments, such as increased austerity, improved efficiency, and a crackdown on abuses.
