*Panama’s government has announced that it will open a tender to construct a port on the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal in early 2026. In order to proceed with the project, it has expropriated land in the area granted years ago under concession to an operator, Panamá Colón Container Port, that failed to fulfil its commitments, according to authorities. The
“world-class port” will be built on Isla Margarita, in the Caribbean province of Colón, President
José Raúl Mulino said during his weekly press conference. Mulino expressed confidence that there would be
“a lot of appetite for the concession”. There are currently three large ports on the Atlantic side of the interoceanic waterway, operated by the US company SSA Marine, the Taiwanese Evergreen Group, and the Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings. The Panama Canal Authority, meanwhile, reportedly plans to tender for two major port projects - Corozal on the Pacific side of the waterway and Telfers on the Atlantic side – on 27 October.
