Bolivia embarks on a new chapter under Paz

Faced with a choice between two conservative candidates in the presidential run-off election on 19 October, Bolivians opted for the lesser-known entity. Rodrigo Paz, of the centre-right Partido Demócrata Cristiano (PDC), defied the expectations of pollsters and won a comfortable victory over former president Jorge Quiroga (2001-2002), representing the right-wing Libre. Paz, a former senator who had a low profile until the election campaign, will face no shortage of challenges – not least a badly ailing economy and a possible resurgence of mass protests by the followers of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019).
