In brief: Nicaragua steps up Chinese mining concessions

*Nicaragua’s government has granted three new open-pit mining concessions to two Chinese companies, according to the official gazette. The total surface area of the new concessions in the departments of Nueva Segovia, bordering Honduras, and Boaco amount to 21,303 hectares (ha). The energy and mines ministry confirmed that Three Gold Coins Company had been granted two mining permits – one for 6,513 ha in Wiwilí municipality, Nueva Segovia, and one for 1,429 ha in Quilalí, Nueva Segovia – and Little Stone Mine one of 13,361 ha in Boaco department. The government has now reportedly granted 30 mining concessions to Chinese companies, totalling almost 600,000 ha in the last two years. Environmental organisations such as Fundación del Río have criticised recent concessions in particular for being located in environmentally sensitive areas and indigenous territories in contravention of national and international legislation.
