Peru’s congress unceremoniously dumped President Dina Boluarte on 9 October. Boluarte was entirely reliant on the support of right-wing parties in congress that propped her up purely to take advantage of her weakness. They were always likely to cast aside the deeply unpopular president at some stage before next April’s presidential and congressional elections to try and avoid being tarnished by association. Several months of political uncertainty lie ahead, however, not least because it is far from clear that the president of congress who succeeds Boluarte, José Jerí, has the political aptitude to navigate the country safely through to the elections, amid a crisis of legitimacy, especially as widespread protests could intensify after a protester was killed on 15 October.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1586 words.
